Tension erupted at Road 7, near Olobe Hotel in the Eleyele area of Ife East Local Government Area, following an alleged attempt to remove electoral materials after voting.

A video obtained by P.M. NEWS showed motorcyclists pursuing a bus before overtaking and blocking it as residents raised the alarm.

People at the scene alleged that the occupants of the bus were attempting to leave the area with ballots, result sheets or other electoral materials. P.M. NEWS could not independently confirm what was inside the vehicle or whether its occupants were authorised election personnel.

An eyewitness who spoke with P.M. NEWS said residents moved quickly to defend their votes after becoming suspicious of the bus.

“I think those inside the bus were trying to carry the people’s votes, and those on motorcycles quickly double-crossed them. This was the little video I could record before I ran inside,” she said.

The incident sparked a commotion as residents surrounded the vehicle and demanded that the suspected electoral materials should not be taken away.

The eyewitness also lamented the alleged absence of security operatives at the scene to intervene and protect the electoral process.

It was unclear at the time of filing whether any electoral materials were recovered from the bus or whether anyone was arrested.

INEC and the police had yet to issue official statements on the incident.
