Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has attributed the improvement in the state’s security situation to measures introduced by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Waiya spoke on Saturday while receiving, on behalf of the governor, an Award of Excellence in Security Governance conferred on the governor by the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies (ISSS) in Kaduna.

The commissioner said the state government had adopted measures aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity while promoting greater community participation in crime prevention.

He said the government had continued to support security agencies and other stakeholders in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

“The Government of Kano State has therefore continued to support the relevant security agencies and stakeholders in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities, while promoting initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity and strengthening community participation in crime prevention,” he said.

Waiya said the recognition underscored the importance of political leadership in building a safe, peaceful and resilient society.

He noted that security could not be achieved by government and security agencies alone, stressing the need for collective action among different sectors of society.

“Security is a shared responsibility requiring the collective efforts of government, security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society, the private sector, the media and citizens,” he said.

The commissioner commended the ISSS for recognising leadership committed to security governance and public safety, saying such recognition would encourage continuous improvement in security administration.

He said the award would also inspire other political leaders to place the safety and welfare of citizens at the centre of governance.

“Such recognition will undoubtedly encourage continuous improvement and inspire other leaders to place security and the welfare of citizens at the centre of governance,” Waiya said.

He also praised the institute for its contributions to professional security education, strategic research, capacity development and stakeholder engagement.

According to him, such efforts are important to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and developing the human capacity required to respond to emerging security challenges.

Waiya said the award was a reflection of the Kano State Government’s efforts to strengthen security, protect lives and property, promote peace and create an enabling environment for sustainable socio-economic development.

“This distinguished recognition is not only a celebration of His Excellency’s leadership but also a commendation of the commitment, courage and strategic approach of the Kano State Government towards strengthening security, protecting lives and property, promoting peace, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable socio-economic development,” he said.

The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with security institutions, professional bodies, academia, communities and other stakeholders to further improve security and promote development in Kano.

“As we celebrate this well-deserved honour, I wish to reaffirm the commitment of the Kano State Government to working collaboratively with security institutions, professional bodies, academia, communities and other stakeholders to build a safer, more peaceful and prosperous Kano State,” he said.
