The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Jacob Irewa, over an alleged attempt to set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic dispute in Lokoja.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and promptly mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his consent.
The suspect was said to have subsequently threatened his wife, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly poured it on her before setting her ablaze.
The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
The police said the suspect, during questioning, admitted to setting his wife on fire.
The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, condemned the incident, stressing the Command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.
He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through lawful and peaceful means, warning against actions capable of endangering lives.
The Police said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons found responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
