Factional National Chairman of the Accord Party, Prof Chris Imumolen said the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke in last Saturday’s Osun State governorship election will not resolve the party’s leadership tussle.

Imumolen is challenging Maxwell Mgbudem claim of the leadership of the party.

While Mgbudem backed Adeleke during last Saturday’s governorship election Imumolen supported candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Oyebamiji.

In a statement after the declaration of the result of the election, the factional Chairman reminded Adeleke that the Accord leadership dispute would be determined by the courts.

“It is important to distinguish political analysis from an established legal fact,” he said, but added that “A victory by Imumolen’s faction would not automatically mean that Adeleke would be removed from office.

“The actual consequences would depend on the final judgement, the orders made by the court, and the applicable electoral law.

“What is clear is that the political battle has had two fronts: the ballot box and the courtroom.”

Imumolen noted that whereas an election result might settle the electoral contest, it does not automatically stop a separate legal dispute over party leadership.

“The ballot may produce a winner.
The court may determine the legal consequences,” he said.

Imumolen however stated that if the courts rule in favour of his faction, “the consequences could extend beyond the internal leadership of Accord and potentially affect the political foundation on which Adeleke contested.”
