The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa over an alleged attempt to set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday, following a domestic disagreement between the couple.

According to the Police, operatives of the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received information about the incident and promptly mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that trouble started after the victim reportedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his consent.

The suspect allegedly became angry, threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle and poured it on her before setting her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

The Police said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he set his wife on fire, while further investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, condemned the alleged act and reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for domestic and other forms of violence.

He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful and peaceful means, warning against actions that could result in loss of life or serious injury.

The Police Command said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution after the conclusion of investigations.

The Command also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that individuals involved in violent crimes are brought to justice.
