The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that it published only the documents submitted by candidates for the 2027 presidential election and has no authority to question or alter them.

A top-ranking official at the commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Sunday PUNCH that the publication of credentials was meant to enable public scrutiny and allow anyone with objections to raise them through the proper channels.

“We only published what was submitted to the commission. We don’t have any authority to question those ones. I mean, our own is just to publish so that anybody who has an objection can raise issues with what we’ve published,” the source said.

The explanation followed public observations that President Bola Tinubu’s primary and secondary school certificates were missing from the credentials published for presidential candidates. 

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate’s documents listed only his Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge papers.

Meanwhile, a legal counsel and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Kalu Agu, submitted a petition against Tinubu to the European Commission in Brussels on Friday. 

Agu alleged that the President presented false academic credentials to INEC and failed to disclose details of the primary and secondary schools he attended. 

A video shared by Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, showed Agu presenting the petition. Agu called on the European Union to intervene over what he described as an alleged subversion of Nigeria’s constitutional order.
