Super Falcons train
The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has asked the Super Falcons technical crew led by Justine Madugu to step down with immediate effect.
The NFF announced the decision in a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the football body wrote.
Falcons suffer disappointing WAFCON campaign
The decision comes after the Super Falcons endured a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria, who entered the tournament as defending champions and had won a record-extending 10th continental title in 2024, were eliminated in the quarter-finals after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.
The quarter-final exit was particularly disappointing as it ended Nigeria’s hopes of securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through a top-four finish at the tournament.
Super Falcons miss World Cup for first time
Following their defeat to Cameroon, the Super Falcons were given another opportunity to keep their World Cup hopes alive through a play-in match.
However, Nigeria suffered another setback when they lost 2-1 to South Africa, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The defeat means the Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991.
NFF makes technical crew decision
The back-to-back setbacks at the WAFCON and World Cup qualification have now been followed by the NFF’s decision to ask Madugu and the members of his technical crew to step down.
Madugu had taken responsibility for the team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 World Cup, while calls had intensified for changes to the technical setup following the disappointing campaign.
The NFF is expected to provide further details on the next steps concerning the Super Falcons technical crew.
Details later…
