Synod themed “Thus far has the Lord helped us” marks 20th Anniversary of the Diocese
THE Anglican Diocese of Lagos Mainland will commence its 4-day synod on Thursday afternoon with a Eucharistic service at the Cathedral Church of St. Jude, Ebute Meta.
The synod, themed “Thus far has the Lord helped us” — 1 Samuel 7:12, is the second session of the seventh synod of the 20-year-old diocese. The guest preacher is The Rt. Revd. Emmanuel Morris, Bishop of Maiduguri.
A synod is the annual festival of the bishop, during which delegates from churches in the diocese, guests, representatives from other dioceses, and members of civil society gather to deliberate on urgent issues confronting the church and society.
The official opening of the business session will take place on Friday at All Saints’ Church, Yaba. Dignitaries and church representatives will be in attendance to receive the State-of-the-Church-and-Society Address from the host diocesan bishop, The Rt. Revd. Akinpelu Johnson.
On Saturday, delegates from the 52 churches across the diocese will, in successive sessions, examine contemporary issues affecting the church and the wider society.
The synod will climax on Sunday with a closing service at the Cathedral Church of St. Jude, Ebute Meta. The day is of double significance as it marks exactly 20 years since the diocese was inaugurated as the 95th diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.
