Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that he would not compete for the spotlight by the time he attains age 40.

Davido revealed this during a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast, where he discussed the future of his generation in the music industry.

He explained that he and other artists from his generation should consider stepping back from the music spotlight within the next five to six years to give younger musicians more room to thrive.

The singer said he does not believe older artists should continue competing with musicians in their 20s for the same level of attention.

He encouraged his contemporaries to consider taking breaks from active music and exploring other opportunities while allowing younger artists to take over the spotlight.

Davido also said his existing catalogue would allow him to return to music after a long break and still attract a large audience.

“This is me and my contemporaries’ last 5–6 years. I am not going to be 40, still dragging the spotlight with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break and he is doing his thing.

“I can take a 10-year break, come back, and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue.

“There are so many other things music should be able to help you branch into. I am not saying we should retire. But I am not going to be 40 and dragging the spotlight with some 20-year-old kid,” he explained.
