The Kaduna state Police Command has ordered an investigation into officers seen allegedly extorting motorists and cyclists during a stop-and-search operation in a viral social media video.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, directed that the officers involved be identified and invited for investigation, saying those found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
The command, in a statement issued by its spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, said routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations had been curtailed, except where credible intelligence indicated the movement of criminals, arms or other prohibited items.
It, however, said the location featured in the video was a known route previously used by criminal elements in the Millennium City area, noting that police operatives had earlier recovered 20 AK-47 rifles along the same route.
The command stressed that legitimate security operations must not be used as an avenue for extortion, harassment or other forms of misconduct, warning officers against compromising professional standards.
The CP commended members of the public for their vigilance and urged residents to continue reporting unprofessional conduct by police personnel.
The command said complaints could be made to the Police Complaint Response Unit on 09049498983, 08075391105 and 07039675856.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professional policing, accountability and protection of the rights and safety of residents across Kaduna State.
