... Akpabio, Eno, Abbas, Others Laud Rep Patrick Umoh
A member representing Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim and Obot Akara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Patrick Umoh, has received commendations from the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio; Governor Umo Eno; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas; and the wife of the Senate President, Mrs Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, for what they described as impactful and effective representation.
The commendations came during Umoh’s Constituency Briefing and Mega Empowerment Programme held on Monday at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, where the lawmaker presented more than 700 empowerment items, cash grants and other interventions to constituents.
The empowerment package included 3 ambulances, 10 cars, 5 mini-buses, 55 tricycles, 37 motorcycles, 37 deep freezers and 33 sewing machines, alongside 300 bags of fertiliser distributed to 21 beneficiaries and 20 million in cash grants to beneficiaries.
The interventions, according to the lawmaker, were designed to strengthen livelihoods, promote self-reliance, stimulate economic activity and expand access to opportunities across the constituency.
Beyond the empowerment items, Umoh used the occasion to present a scorecard of his legislative and oversight activities since his election to the National Assembly.
He disclosed that he had facilitated 120 federal jobs, contributed to 66 bills, presented 18 motions and handled 16 public petitions.
He also highlighted his leadership responsibilities in the House, including his previous chairmanship of the House Committee on Monitoring, Evaluation and Implementation of the Legislative Agenda, his current chairmanship of the House Committee on Health Institutions, and his position as Chairman of the Nigeria–Tanzania Parliamentary Relations Committee.
Speaking on the interventions, Umoh said they were not merely about distributing physical items, but about creating opportunities that could translate into sustainable livelihoods and improved living conditions for constituents.
“These interventions are not merely physical projects. They are about restoring economic activity, improving security, supporting education and giving our communities a better quality of life,” he said.
He described the constituency briefing as an account of his stewardship rather than a declaration that his work was complete, assuring constituents of his continued commitment to legislation, development projects, youth opportunities and empowerment programmes that promote self-reliance.
Representing the President of the 10th Senate, Senator (Dr) Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, the Member representing Abak, Etim Ekpo and Ika Federal Constituency, Hon. Clement Jimbo, described the programme as a manifestation of the dividends of democracy.
“Politics is an engagement, and the people are the instruments. When the dividends of politics are brought home, the polity becomes vibrant, active, hopeful and rewarding,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President, who described Umoh as his political protégé, expressed satisfaction with his development and commitment to public service, urging him to sustain the momentum.
“You have unarguably been my political protégé. Suffice it to say that I am pleased with you. You have walked in my footsteps with unalterable assuredness, giving hope that my generation is building a political workforce that would take over from us,” he said.
Also speaking, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, described Umoh’s intervention as a demonstration of effective representation.
“This is what effective representation looks like. This federal constituency is very strategic, like I said before, because this is the home of the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Godswill Akpabio,” Uwah said.
He commended Umoh for bringing federal opportunities and empowerment initiatives closer to the people and strengthening the relationship between the representative and his constituents.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, who was also represented at the event by the leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, commended Umoh for what he described as impactful representation and urged beneficiaries to put the items and resources to productive use.
“The people of this constituency are very, very lucky. You are lucky you have a young man. You are lucky you have an intellectual. You are lucky you have a man who has courage and vision,” Abbas said.
He described empowerment as an investment in the economic future of communities, noting that the items would help beneficiaries establish and strengthen businesses.
The Speaker further assured constituents who did not benefit from the current programme that their opportunity would come, expressing confidence that subsequent interventions would be bigger.
Also speaking, the Wife of the Senate President, Mrs Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, commended the initiative, particularly its focus on women and youths.
She thanked Umoh for inviting stakeholders to witness the empowerment items brought from Abuja and for prioritising his constituents.
“We have seen some of the items, and we sincerely appreciate Dr Patrick Umoh for remembering and prioritising his constituents, particularly the women and youths,” she said.
Unoma Akpabio noted that the interventions were made possible within the broader leadership framework of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending Umoh for embracing an approach that prioritises empowering citizens.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the chairman of the occasion and Secretary of the All Progressive Congress in Akwa Ibom State, Envoy Nsentip Akpabio, described Rep Umoh as an epitome of effective representation.
Similarly, the 3 local government chairmen of the constituency who spoke through the chairman of Ikot Ekpene, Hon Aniefiok Nkom, expressed satisfaction with the representation of Dr Umoh.
In his goodwill message, Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien, who spoke on behalf of stakeholders, said Dr Umoh has diligently discharged his core mandate as a legislator in lawmaking, oversight function and representation.
The programme brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, party leaders and constituents, who witnessed the presentation of the empowerment items and an account of the lawmaker’s legislative stewardship.
