Nigerian actor Charles Inojie has criticised the quality of education among some Nigerian university graduates, expressing concern over what he described as inadequate knowledge and skills among degree holders.
Inojie shared his experience during a discussion with a person who told him she had studied Linguistics. According to the actor, he was surprised by her lack of familiarity with some fundamental concepts in the field.
He said he mentioned renowned linguist Noam Chomsky and related topics during their conversation, but the graduate appeared unfamiliar with the subject, despite having studied Linguistics.
“I was having a discussion with someone on set, she now said she studied Linguistics. She was so surprised and couldn’t believe it when I said, ‘Oh, all these Noam Chomsky children.’ She was lost when we started discussing her course of study, Linguistics, meanwhile it’s an elective course for me. She was lost. I was really disappointed in her and that thing dey worry me,” Inojie said.
The actor’s comments come amid ongoing concerns over the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria and the preparedness of graduates for the labour market.
He further referenced claims that many Nigerian graduates are not adequately equipped with the skills required to secure and retain employment.
“I’ve heard people say that a good number of our graduates today are not employable. That statement no too far from the truth o. That is why many of them are not willing to work,” he added.
