Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed his permanent move to Coventry City from Nottingham Forest, where he will link up with fellow Nigerian international Frank Onyeka.
The 29-year-old forward joins Coventry in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million, ending his four-year spell at Nottingham Forest.
Coventry City confirmed the signing of Awoniyi as the club strengthens its squad ahead of its return to the Premier League.
The move reunites Awoniyi with Onyeka, who is already part of the Coventry squad.
Awoniyi expressed his excitement after completing the transfer, saying he was looking forward to working with his new teammates.
“I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City.
“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
Awoniyi’s Forest record
Awoniyi spent four seasons with Nottingham Forest after joining the club in 2022.
During his time at the City Ground, he scored 21 league goals in 90 appearances and 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions.
He scored 11 goals during his first season at Forest, helping the club avoid relegation after returning to the Premier League and reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Awoniyi was also part of the Forest side that finished seventh and secured European football qualification in the 2024-25 season.
Awoniyi’s career before Nottingham Forest
The Nigerian striker began his professional career at Liverpool before spending time on loan with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and KAA Gent.
He later moved to Germany, spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Mainz 05 before joining Union Berlin on a temporary basis the following campaign.
Union Berlin subsequently signed him permanently in 2021.
The 2021-22 season was particularly productive for Awoniyi, as he scored 20 goals, including four in the UEFA Conference League.
His performances attracted Nottingham Forest, who signed him in 2022 for a club-record fee.
Awoniyi’s international career
At international level, Awoniyi has earned 10 caps for Nigeria and scored twice for the Super Eagles.
His move to Coventry provides the striker with another opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League and contribute to the club’s campaign following its promotion from the Championship.
