The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers to withdraw consumer goods with incomplete, deceptive, or misleading labels from the market.
In a public advisory issued Tuesday, the commission said market surveillance and inspections revealed widespread circulation of products lacking key information such as production and expiry dates, batch numbers, manufacturer details, ingredient lists, allergen warnings, and country of origin.
The FCCPC stressed that deceptive labelling violates consumers’ right to accurate information and exposes them to health, safety, and economic risks. It warned that businesses failing to comply risk regulatory enforcement action.
“All manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers must immediately review their inventories and withdraw from sale any consumer goods that do not comply with applicable labelling requirements,” the statement read.
The commission, empowered under the FCCPC Act 2018, said it would intensify nationwide surveillance in collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to ensure compliance.
Consumers were advised to carefully examine product labels before purchase and report suspected cases of non-compliance through official complaint channels.
