A woman identified as Mrs Atim Akposi, popularly known as Atim Eyo, has died from severe burns after she was allegedly attacked and set ablaze by her son in Ojo community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, following a long-running dispute between the victim and her son, Emmanuel Akposi, who had allegedly accused her of witchcraft.

Family sources said Emmanuel had repeatedly blamed his mother for the death of his child, allegedly claiming that some pastors had identified her as responsible.

According to the victim’s elder son, Eyo Akposi, Emmanuel had confronted their mother several times over the allegation and had previously attempted to harm her.

Eyo alleged that on the day of the incident, Emmanuel entered his mother’s room and attacked her. He reportedly attempted to strangle her before hitting her and causing her to fall. He allegedly proceeded to pour fuel on her and set her on fire before fleeing the community.

Neighbours who heard the alarm reportedly rushed to the scene and took the badly injured woman to a community health centre in Ojo. She was later transferred to Akamkpa General Hospital and subsequently moved to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Despite efforts to save her, Atim reportedly died in the early hours of Monday from injuries sustained in the attack.

The family has since reported the incident to the Uyanga Divisional Police Station in Akamkpa. Police authorities have reportedly commenced an investigation and launched a manhunt for Emmanuel, who remains at large.

The case has renewed concerns over the dangers of witchcraft accusations and how unverified spiritual claims can escalate into deadly violence within families.
