Mikel Arteta has joined an exclusive group of Premier League managers after recording his 150th victory in the competition as Arsenal opened their title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
The landmark victory came in Arteta’s 249th Premier League match in charge of Arsenal, making him only the fifth manager in the history of the competition to reach 150 wins in fewer than 250 games. Blueprint reports
The Arsenal boss now finds himself in elite company alongside Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Sir Alex Ferguson, underlining the remarkable consistency he has achieved since taking charge of the Gunners.
The milestone was confirmed after Arsenal comfortably dispatched Coventry on Friday night, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Ødegaard finding the net to give the reigning champions a perfect start to their title defence.
Arteta’s achievement places him fifth on the all-time list of managers who have reached 150 Premier League victories in fewer than 250 matches.
The select group stands at:
Pep Guardiola — 204 games
Jose Mourinho — 231 games
Jurgen Klopp — 237 games
Sir Alex Ferguson — 247 games
Mikel Arteta — 249 games
Arteta had the opportunity to reach the landmark in Arsenal’s opening fixture after entering the match on 149 Premier League victories from 248 games.
Victory over Coventry ensured he achieved the feat at the first attempt, making the occasion even more significant as Arsenal began their first title defence since winning the Premier League crown last season.
Arsenal deliver perfect start
The historic achievement was accompanied by a commanding performance from Arsenal.
The champions needed just 15 minutes to break the deadlock, with Havertz putting the hosts ahead.
Saka then doubled Arsenal’s advantage before the half-hour mark, leaving Coventry facing a difficult task on their return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
Ødegaard completed the scoring shortly after the restart, giving Arsenal a 3-0 victory and ensuring Arteta could celebrate his landmark win with three points and a clean sheet.
The result also gave Arsenal an ideal beginning to their attempt to retain the Premier League title, following their success last season.
From difficult beginning to 150 wins
Arteta’s journey to the milestone has been far from straightforward.
The former Arsenal captain returned to the club as manager in December 2019 after serving as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
He inherited a team that had struggled for consistency and was going through a period of transition following the departure of Arsène Wenger and Unai Emery.
Arteta’s first full seasons were marked by rebuilding, tactical experimentation and the gradual introduction of a new playing identity.
There were difficult moments, including an eighth-place finish in his first two full Premier League campaigns, but the Spaniard remained committed to his project.
The decision to persist with Arteta eventually paid dividends as Arsenal developed into one of the strongest sides in English football.
Title finally arrives
Arteta’s transformation of Arsenal culminated in the club winning the Premier League title last season, ending a 22-year wait for the championship.
The triumph was particularly significant because Arsenal had repeatedly come close in previous campaigns without finishing at the summit.
Arteta’s team eventually converted its sustained challenge into silverware, establishing the Spaniard as the manager who restored Arsenal to the top of English football.
His 150th Premier League victory now adds another significant statistic to his growing managerial record.
More importantly, the achievement has come while Arteta remains relatively young by the standards of managers who have reached such milestones.
Guardiola remains in a league of his own
While Arteta’s achievement is remarkable, Guardiola remains comfortably ahead of the field when it comes to reaching 150 Premier League victories.
The Manchester City manager required only 204 matches to reach the mark, setting a record that remains difficult to match.
Mourinho achieved the feat in 231 matches, Klopp in 237 and Ferguson in 247.
Arteta’s 249 matches place him just two games behind Ferguson and 12 behind Klopp, but reaching the milestone in fewer than 250 games puts him in a group reserved for some of the greatest managers in Premier League history.
The comparison is also significant because Arteta learned under Guardiola during his time at Manchester City, before embarking on his own managerial career at Arsenal.
A landmark in a new era
Arteta’s 150th win comes at the beginning of what Arsenal hope will be another successful chapter.
The Gunners have already shown their ambition by beginning the new season as defending champions and strengthening their squad during the summer.
Their victory over Coventry was also their first league match since lifting the title, giving Arteta an opportunity to immediately demonstrate that Arsenal’s championship-winning campaign was not an isolated success.
The comfortable victory was also Arsenal’s joint-biggest home win on the opening weekend of a Premier League season, according to match reports.
More records ahead
At 44, Arteta still has potentially many years ahead of him as a manager.
That means his 150 Premier League victories could eventually become the first of several major milestones.
His immediate challenge, however, is to ensure Arsenal can defend their crown and establish a period of sustained dominance in English football.
The Spaniard has already transformed Arsenal from a side struggling to regain its place among England’s elite into Premier League champions.
Now, with 150 league victories secured in just 249 matches, Arteta has another piece of evidence to support his growing reputation.
150 wins. 249 matches. Five managers in history.
Mikel Arteta has officially entered Premier League managerial royalty.
