The victory represents a major milestone for Nigerian volleyball, with the country set to make its Olympic debut in the beach volleyball event at Los Angeles 2028.

The African championship in Alexandria was also significant because the continental tournament served as the direct qualification pathway for the African women’s beach volleyball quota for the next Olympic Games. The International Volleyball Federation, FIVB, had confirmed that one women’s pair from each of the five continental championships would earn a quota place for Los Angeles 2028.

Mbah and Bawa complete remarkable campaign

Mbah and Bawa entered the championship as one of Nigeria’s leading beach volleyball pairs and justified their status with a series of impressive performances in Alexandria.

The pair began their knockout campaign with a straight sets victory over hosts Egypt, winning 21 17 and 21 16 in the Round of 16 on Friday.

They followed that with a dramatic quarterfinal victory over Morocco, recovering from a second set defeat to win 2 1, with scores of 21 17, 15 21 and 15 11.

Their resilience earned them a place in the semifinal, where they continued their impressive run before securing the championship and Olympic qualification against Morocco in the final.

The achievement is particularly significant for the Nigerian pair, who won bronze at the 2025 African Beach Volleyball Championship. FIVB had identified Mbah and Bawa among the leading African pairs going into this year’s competition.

Nigeria’s Olympic breakthrough

Nigeria has competed at the Olympic Games in indoor volleyball and has produced athletes across several volleyball disciplines, but beach volleyball had never previously featured an Nigerian pair at the Olympics.

Mbah and Bawa have now ended that wait.

Their qualification means the duo will become the first Nigerian beach volleyball players to compete at the Olympic Games when the world’s biggest sporting event heads to Los Angeles in 2028.

The achievement also provides another boost for the development of beach volleyball in the country, which has enjoyed growing success at continental level in recent years.

Nigeria’s progress has been particularly notable in the women’s event, with the Mbah and Bawa partnership emerging as one of the country’s strongest pairs.

Road to Los Angeles

The 2026 CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Senior Championships in Alexandria brought together some of Africa’s best beach volleyball pairs, with the African title carrying the added reward of Olympic qualification.

The tournament featured strong opposition from established beach volleyball nations including Morocco, Mozambique, Egypt, Cameroon, Senegal and South Africa.

Morocco entered the competition as one of the teams to beat, with FIVB noting that its pair of Dina Mellal and Imane Yakki were seeking a third consecutive African title. Egypt’s Marwa Abdelhady and Doaa Elghobashy were also chasing another Olympic appearance after representing Africa at Paris 2024.

Nigeria’s triumph therefore represents a major upset and a significant achievement against some of the continent’s most established beach volleyball nations.

Historic moment for Nigerian volleyball

For Mbah and Bawa, the victory is the culmination of years of development and competition on the African circuit.

Their performance in Alexandria has not only delivered Nigeria’s first Olympic qualification in beach volleyball but has also placed the country among the nations that will compete for Olympic honours in Los Angeles.

The Nigerian Volleyball Federation and the coaching team will now turn their attention towards preparing the pair for the global stage, where they will face the best beach volleyball teams from across the world.

For Nigerian sports fans, however, the immediate significance is clear.

Esther Mbah and Pamela Bawa have made history.

With their 2 0 victory over Morocco, the Nigerian duo have won the African title, secured the continent’s Olympic quota and opened a new chapter in the country’s volleyball history.

Nigeria will now head to Los Angeles 2028 with its first ever beach volleyball representatives at the Olympic Games.
