Five adult men have been killed in a road crash involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco heavy-duty truck on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The accident reportedly occurred at about 5:16 a.m. on Saturday around the Sawmill area, near Mowo Bus Stop, with emergency responders subsequently deployed to the scene.

According to the information provided by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, was travelling at high speed when its driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle crossed the median and entered the lane of an oncoming Iveco truck, with registration number T28081 LA, resulting in a head-on collision.

All five occupants of the Camry, identified as adult males, died in the crash.

Emergency responders from LASEMA’s Dolphin Response Team worked alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police Force to recover the victims and clear the highway.

The victims’ remains were reportedly removed from the wreckage and handed over to the FRSC for further identification and transfer to a mortuary.

Two heavy-duty recovery vehicles were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles from the expressway. The accidented vehicles were subsequently taken to the Morogbo Police Division as investigations into the crash continued.

Preliminary accounts attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control, although the circumstances surrounding the collision remain subject to further investigation.

The incident has again raised concerns over the dangers of speeding on major highways, particularly during the early hours when visibility and road conditions can increase the risks faced by motorists.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices.

He stressed that road safety requires cooperation from all road users and called on motorists to exercise greater caution to prevent avoidable fatalities.

Note: I could not independently verify the specific August 22, 2026 crash details from a reliable online report during the search. Recent reports do, however, confirm that speeding and loss of control have been identified as causes in several fatal crashes on Lagos roads and major highways.
