Viral ‘Good morning Tony’ trainee gets N500,000, ambassadorial appointment

A young corporate trainee who went viral after addressing billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu by his first name during a graduation ceremony has received a N500,000 financial package and an ambassadorial appointment.

The trainee also received an invitation to publicly share her experience following the incident, which sparked widespread debate on social media over workplace etiquette, respect and corporate hierarchy.

The incident occurred during the graduation ceremony of United Bank for Africa’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme.

Trainee’s remark sparks controversy

The graduate trainee was given an opportunity to address the gathering and began her speech with the words, “Good morning, Tony.”

Elumelu immediately interrupted her and asked that she address him as “Mr. Elumelu,” “TOE” or “Chairman.”

He explained that he does not subscribe to informal first-name greetings within corporate settings.

The brief exchange quickly spread across social media, generating mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some criticised the trainee for failing to observe corporate protocol, others argued that the incident should be treated as a learning experience rather than a reason for public condemnation.

Ossai announces support package

Amid the online reactions, Ossai Ovie Success, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, appealed to Nigerians to stop criticising the young professional.

Ossai announced the support package in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Saturday.

The package includes N500,000 in direct financial assistance and an appointment as an ambassador for the 4th Delta Social Media Summit.

She will also receive round-trip flight tickets to Asaba, five-star hotel accommodation and VIP access to the summit at the Mariam Babangida Leisure Park.

Trainee invited to tell her side

The young woman has also been invited to speak at the summit and share her personal experience of the incident that made her a subject of widespread online discussion.

Ossai commended Elumelu for highlighting the importance of workplace protocol but stressed that young professionals should be guided and mentored when they make mistakes.

He said the trainee had been invited to connect with the event organisers ahead of the scheduled summit in Asaba.

The development has shifted attention from the original controversy to discussions about mentorship, workplace etiquette and the need to support young professionals as they navigate corporate environments.
