A woman who described him as a father figure wrote that he came into her life at age 13 and gave her everlasting wisdom, righteousness, patience, understanding, and backbone. She said nobody could tell her she was not his biological daughter and that he always stood behind her.

A friend wrote that his wife received countless calls from Figgures asking for money. Her husband would argue with him and hang up, then immediately send the money anyway. She said she would miss their arguing and that he came through so much for a senseless act of violence to take him.

A cousin wrote that, like any family, they fought and argued, but Figgures always made sure people knew they were family.

Friends remembered him by his nickname, Big Ben, and Pops, a reflection of the father figure role he played in his community.
