SOKOTO: Hon. Bashir Usman Gorau, member of the House of Representatives representing Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency, has condemned the wave of terrorist attacks, killings, abductions and the devastating Goronyo boat disaster, saying the growing loss of innocent lives demands urgent and decisive action from government.

Gorau spoke during a condolence tour of Shinaka, Birjingo, Gorau, Goronyo and Giyawa communities, where he visited bereaved families and victims of recent terrorist attacks, the fatal boat disaster and other tragedies that have left communities in mourning.

The lawmaker described the incidents as devastating blows to his constituents, stressing that the recurring loss of lives through insecurity and preventable disasters had subjected rural communities to hardship, fear and uncertainty.

At Shinaka, Gorau commiserated with residents affected by attacks and abductions allegedly carried out by armed terrorists, assuring the community that their suffering would not be ignored.

He also visited Birjingo, where two residents were reportedly killed in an attack, and expressed sympathy to the affected families while providing support to cushion the immediate impact of the tragedy.

The lawmaker subsequently proceeded to Gorau, where he visited families affected by the recent boat disaster that claimed more than 50 lives.

The tragedy, which triggered widespread grief across Sokoto State and beyond, has left scores of families mourning and renewed concerns over the safety of waterways serving communities across the state.

Moving from one bereaved household to another, Gorau conveyed his condolences to relatives of the victims, praying Allah to forgive the deceased, grant them eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear the loss.

At Goronyo, the lawmaker held further condolence visits with families and community members affected by the various tragedies, assuring them that the deaths and suffering endured by their people would continue to receive attention at the appropriate levels of government.

He maintained that the scale of the recent tragedies was too grave to be allowed to fade from public attention, insisting that every life lost must reinforce the determination of government and elected representatives to prevent further deaths.

From Goronyo, Gorau proceeded to Giyawa, where he joined the community in mourning the death of the Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sani Nashera Giyawa.

He condoled with the deceased scholar’s family, followers and the entire Giyawa community, describing his death as another painful loss to the people.

Throughout the condolence tour, Gorau prayed for the souls of those who perished in the boat disaster, asking Allah to admit them into Aljannatul Firdaus and grant their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

He also sympathised with victims of terrorist attacks and families whose loved ones were abducted, stressing that the emotional and economic consequences of insecurity extend far beyond the immediate victims.

Gorau strongly condemned the activities of terrorists and armed groups attacking innocent civilians, warning that the continued killing, abduction and displacement of citizens could no longer be treated as an ordinary security challenge.

He said the government must confront the menace with renewed urgency through stronger intelligence gathering, improved operational capacity and sustained security presence in vulnerable communities.

The federal lawmaker pledged to deploy everything within his constitutional powers to support measures aimed at strengthening security and protecting the lives and property of residents of Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency and Sokoto State.

According to him, the recent tragedies have exposed the urgent need for stronger protection of vulnerable communities and decisive interventions capable of preventing further loss of lives.

He also stressed the importance of improving safety standards along waterways, noting that many rural communities depend heavily on boats for transportation, trade, farming and access to essential services.

Gorau’s condolence tour was accompanied by the Sokoto State House of Assembly member representing Goronyo Constituency, Hon. Nasiru Adamu; former Goronyo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abdulwahab Yahaya Goronyo; and other stakeholders from Goronyo, who joined him in mourning the victims and standing in solidarity with the affected families.
