Social commentator and anti-corruption advocate, Mahdi Shehu, has strongly criticised the inclusion of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, in the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council for the 2027 general elections.

Shehu, writing on his official X account on Sunday, questioned why Edu was appointed despite facing allegations of financial misconduct. 

His remarks came after the Presidency released the full list of 223 members of the APC campaign council on Saturday.

According to Shehu, Edu’s presence on the campaign team undermines credibility and raises concerns about the standards guiding the council’s composition. 

He argued that allowing someone with unresolved allegations involving billions of naira to play a key role in the campaign sends the wrong signal.

“With pending alleged multi-billion fraud and theft and yet able to be nominated as a member of the campaign council, Betta Edu has gone to prove one thing: criminal record is an asset and crime has a special 7-star accommodation,” Shehu wrote.

He further described the development as a reflection of contradictions within Nigeria’s democratic system, pointing to what he called a lack of accountability and shame. 

Shehu also referenced the case of Halima Shehu, former head of the National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), who raised fraud concerns but was allegedly blackmailed instead of supported.

“Nigeria’s democracy is full of irony and shamelessness, where whistleblowers like Halima Shehu are attacked while those accused of fraud are rewarded,” he added.
