Edo Elders Hails Okpebholo’s Restoration Of Customary Court Of Appeal

Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has been commended for restoring the Customary Court of Appeal as part of the judiciary ecosystem in Edo.

This forthright action was applauded by the Committee of Benin Elders on Monday, August 24.

In a terse statement signed by both the Chairman, Professor Dennis Agbonlahor (FAS); and Secretary, Andy Ehanire, the Elders said the restoration is a welcome development for the continued existence of the customary and traditional institution in the State and at the national level.

‘‘For some years, we, the members of the Committee of Benin Elders, had lamented the abrogation of the institution of the Customary Court of Appeal that was exponentially our traditional judicial model, which was exported to the national level,’’ the Elders noted.

Its statement reads further: ‘‘Now that this stratum has been reintroduced into our judicial system, it is only natural that we acknowledge and commend Governor Monday Okpebholo for this singular act.

‘‘We also acknowledge the efforts of retired Honourable Justice Isaac Aluyi and Honourable Justice J. O. Olubor; both of who made passionate submissions in the efforts to restore this echelon of justice.

‘‘The Members of the Committee of Benin Elders thus deem it necessary that such commendable acts of governance be celebrated.’’
