Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes must be treated as a practical scientific and engineering tool for identifying environmental risks and designing appropriate mitigation measures, rather than a mere regulatory formality. Addressing the 14th Inaugural Lecture of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Professor David Adewuyi Oke warned against unchecked human activities and unregulated development, noting that uncontrolled expansion threatens public health, ecological stability, and community wellbeing.
Delivering his paper titled “Materials and Environment: Safer Communities from Environmental Engineering Perspective,” Professor Oke stressed that Nigeria’s rapid urbanisation and industrial expansion require robust environmental safeguards to mitigate long-term societal risks. While Nigeria maintains an established legal framework governing environmental standards, the overall effectiveness of these provisions depends heavily on continuous monitoring, strict compliance, and rigorous enforcement across all sectors.
Addressing Local Industrial and Infrastructure Hazards
Highlighting specific environmental challenges requiring intervention, Professor Oke pointed to oil spillage remediation at the NNPC Depot, alongside persistent noise pollution at Bodija Market, Tin Can Island Port, and along the Lagos–Ibadan Railway corridor. Indiscriminate tree felling, contaminated water sources, and unmitigated oil leaks remain prevalent hazards that degrade human health and community stability.
To build public trust and enforce compliance, government agencies must institute periodic environmental audits alongside transparent public reporting systems. Furthermore, regulatory authorities should adopt modern technological solutions—including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and real-time data analytics—to detect emerging environmental threats swiftly and accurately.

Fostering Community Engagement and Industrial Collaboration
Public education and local advocacy remain essential for empowering communities to understand their immediate environmental conditions and the health implications of prolonged exposure to pollutants. Protecting existing forestry is equally critical, as trees perform vital ecological functions by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to sustain environmental health.
Extending the discussion on national development, Governing Council Chairman Professor Lanre Nassar called for structured collaboration between academia and private industry. Research institutions must continuously adapt their curricula and research agendas to address practical societal challenges, while commercial enterprises should actively engage academic researchers to translate local innovations into commercial solutions. Concurrently, Rector Taiwo Lasisi reaffirmed that academic research and technological innovation, particularly within fields such as artificial intelligence and renewable energy, remain essential for solving complex national challenges.
