Tears and grief filled Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday as family members, friends, colleagues and fans gathered to bid a final farewell to veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The 66-year-old actor was laid to rest in his hometown in accordance with Islamic rites, a day after his death.
A video from the burial showed mourners carrying Ogogo’s remains to the burial ground as the funeral rites were conducted.
Several Nollywood actors attended the burial, including Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin and Toyosi Adesanya.
Ireti Osayemi and Bisi Omo Logbalogba were also present, alongside other colleagues, family members and well-wishers who gathered to honour the late actor.
Yinka Quadri breaks down in tears
Ogogo’s close friend and colleague, Yinka Quadri, was seen crying during the burial as mourners tried to console him.
The emotional scene reflected the grief among Ogogo’s colleagues and friends following the death of the veteran actor, who was a prominent figure in Yoruba-language cinema.
Actor Bola Oyin-Adejobi also paid tribute to Ogogo during an interview with journalists ahead of the burial, praying for the deceased to attain Al-Jannah Firdaus.
Ogogo died at 66
The burial followed Ogogo’s death at about 3pm on Sunday at the age of 66.
Veteran actor Jide Kosoko announced his death on Instagram and disclosed that the actor’s remains would be taken to Ilaro, where a lying-in-state ceremony was scheduled for Monday.
The Ilaro Muslim Community also announced the burial prayer for the veteran actor.
Family had sought medical assistance
Ogogo’s death came days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance for their father, who had been battling stage-four cancer.
Kaira had disclosed that doctors informed the family that they could no longer administer chemotherapy because of his condition, prompting the family to seek alternative treatment options.
Ogogo’s legacy in Nollywood
Ogogo was a major figure in the Nigerian film industry, particularly Yoruba-language cinema, where he built a career spanning several decades.
His death has continued to generate tributes from actors, filmmakers, fans and other Nigerians who described him as an influential figure whose contributions helped shape the Yoruba film industry.
