ARTISANS and traders in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have applauded the council chairman, Dr Bayo Adefuye, for his N250 million empowerment programme.
The programme provided N250,000 grants to 1,000 traders and artisans, with beneficiaries saying the gesture had boosted their businesses.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adefuye disbursed N250,000 each to traders and small business owners while marking his first 100 days in office in November 2025.
After one year of using the grants to grow their businesses, the beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the empowerment programme.
They told NAN on Tuesday that the council chairman’s empowerment programme and other interventions had positively impacted their businesses and communities.
The Market leader of Asejere Makoko Community, Mr Alao Adegbite, thanked the council chairman for empowering traders and rehabilitating the market.
Adegbite said Adefuye had taken the bull by the horns by rehabilitating the market while empowering traders with cash grants.
“We thank the chairman for his numerous works in the market, particularly the empowerment and rehabilitation projects. We really appreciate him,” he said.
A trader, Mrs Ajoke White, thanked Adefuye for empowering her with a grinding machine and providing free medical services for market men and women.
“I thank him for the free grinding machine given to me and the free medical services provided to market traders in Makoko Community,” she said.
Another market leader, Alhaja Modupe Adebayo, thanked the LCDA chairman for being proactive in addressing environmental challenges in the market.
Adebayo said the council’s continuous environmental enlightenment and regular fumigation had made the market more suitable for trading.
“We enjoy constant fumigation and proper sensitisation on environmental conditions, enabling us to trade in an ideal environment free from diseases,” she said.
An artisan in the community, Mr Lukman Balogun, thanked the council chairman for giving him a new machine for his vulcanising business.
Another artisan, Mr Walid Jimoh, appreciated the chairman for giving him a sewing machine to enhance production in his shop.
A barber, Mr Ayomide Lawal, , also testified to receiving a generator and clippers from the council chairman.
“We really thank the chairman and pray for his successful tenure as the council boss,” he said.
A resident, Mr Kolawole Adebisi, thanked the chairman for providing transformers to Makoko residents to improve power supply in the community.
Another resident, Mrs Uchenna Nyanacho, also testified to the functional Primary Health Centre (PHC) in the community under the current chairman.
“We now have a functional Primary Health Centre in Makoko Community, serving the majority of residents daily with effective medical personnel attending to patients,” she said.
A beneficiary of the N250,000 empowerment grant, Mrs Serah John, thanked the council chairman for the gesture, saying it supported her business.
“I thank the chairman for the huge empowerment grant. The N250,000 has gone a long way in sustaining my business,” she said.
Mrs Florence Ogungbemi, a resident of Iwaya in Yaba LCDA, also applauded the chairman’s human and infrastructural projects.
She said the administration’s policies were in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Ogungbemi added that the chairman’s leadership style would strengthen the bond between the government and the people in the community.
Adefuye, while presenting his scorecard to the community during his one-year anniversary, said his administration had focused on human and infrastructural development.
He said the administration assessed roads, canals, Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and school infrastructure to fulfil its campaign promises, while implementing an N250 million empowerment programme.
Adefuye said the administration’s developmental agenda, tagged Yaba “Tuntun”, meaning the renewal of Yaba, focused on infrastructure and empowerment renewal, improved access to governance and changing residents’ mindset. (NAN)
