Controversy has continued to trail an alleged attempt by the police to arrest Isese advocate Abdulazeez Adegbola, popularly known as Tani Olohun, in Ibadan, Oyo State, with fresh questions emerging over the legal basis of the operation and the reported intervention by Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday at Tani Olohun’s residence, where individuals identified as police officers allegedly arrived to take him into custody in connection with an ongoing criminal case before the Upper Area Court II, Ilorin Judicial Division.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported operation remain unclear, particularly regarding whether the officers were acting on a valid arrest warrant, a court order or another lawful directive.
The uncertainty has become central to the controversy because the case for which Tani Olohun was allegedly being sought remains before the court.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to reports surrounding the incident, members of Tani Olohun’s family contacted Sunday Igboho after the alleged police operation commenced.
Igboho reportedly arrived at the residence accompanied by some supporters and confronted the officers, allegedly preventing them from taking Tani Olohun away.
Footage said to have circulated from the scene showed Tani Olohun in a tense confrontation with individuals identified as police officers.

Family members were reportedly heard questioning the identity of the men and challenging their authority to remove Tani Olohun from the premises.
One individual recording the encounter also alleged that the officers had travelled from Ilorin to Ibadan specifically to execute the arrest.
However, those claims could not independently establish the exact identity of the officers, the police command responsible for the operation or the legal instrument under which they were acting.
What Is the Court Case About?
The reported arrest attempt is linked to a criminal case instituted by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation against Tani Olohun.
The case reportedly arose from a social media video which the foundation alleged mocked an Islamic prayer and had the potential to provoke religious tension.
The complainant reportedly accused Tani Olohun of offences including incitement of religious disturbance, contempt of religious creed and injurious falsehood under relevant provisions of the Kwara State Penal Code Law.
However, the allegations remain allegations.
Tani Olohun has not been convicted of the offences, and the matter remains subject to judicial determination.
The case was reportedly adjourned until September 1, 2026, while neither Tani Olohun nor his lawyer was present at the previous hearing.
The pending status of the matter has therefore raised a fundamental question: what precisely prompted the reported arrest attempt at this stage of the proceedings?
A lawyer familiar with criminal procedure said an arrest in connection with a pending criminal case is not automatically unlawful simply because proceedings are ongoing. However, the circumstances and legal authority behind the arrest must be established.
“The critical issue is whether there was a valid legal basis for the arrest and whether the officers complied with the applicable procedure. The fact that a case is pending does not, by itself, answer that question,” the lawyer said.
Another legal practitioner noted that where an arrest is being carried out pursuant to a warrant, the officers should be able to establish the authority under which they are acting.
“Before judging either the police or the person who intervened, the public needs to know whether there was a warrant, who issued it, what it authorised and whether it was valid at the time of execution,” the lawyer said.
Igboho’s Intervention Sparks Debate
The reported role of Sunday Igboho has generated a separate controversy.
Critics argue that no private individual, regardless of political influence or popularity, should interfere with police officers executing a lawful arrest.
Supporters of the intervention, however, have questioned the authority of the officers and argued that the circumstances of the operation should first be made public.
The controversy has consequently shifted beyond Tani Olohun’s case to a broader question of the limits of police powers and the responsibilities of individuals who intervene in law-enforcement operations.
The incident also raises concerns about whether disputes over arrest procedures should be settled at the scene or through the courts.
