Atlético Madrid forward Julián Alvarez missed Wednesday’s training session after reportedly feeling unwell, adding another twist to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future at the Spanish club.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported, citing Marca, that the Argentina international was absent from Atlético’s training because of illness. Romano said Álvarez was simply “feeling unwell” as he stayed away from the session.

The absence comes at a time when Álvarez’s future remains a major talking point. The 26-year-old has expressed his desire to leave Atlético, with Barcelona understood to be his preferred destination.

However, Atlético have remained firm on their position over the striker, while Arsenal are also monitoring the situation and could become an option if Álvarez decides to consider a move to the Premier League.

Romano reported that Álvarez has so far indicated Barcelona as his preferred club, meaning Arsenal are waiting to see whether the forward becomes open to a move to England.

His latest absence is therefore likely to attract further attention, although the report specifically attributes it to illness rather than suggesting that he deliberately stayed away from training because of the transfer dispute.

Álvarez recently faced a hostile reception from sections of Atlético’s support during the club’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal, highlighting the tension surrounding his situation.

With the transfer window approaching its final days, Álvarez’s next move remains one of the major unresolved stories of the summer.
