Abayomi Hunye, an Ogun governorship aspirant, has come under pressure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, over his alleged continued claim to be the party’s candidate for the January 2027 governorship election.
The APC, in a petition dated August 24 and submitted to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, urged the police to investigate, arrest, and prosecute Hunye for alleged impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace and violation of the Electoral Act 2026.
The party simultaneously reaffirmed Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan (Yayi) as its authentic governorship candidate and Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as his running mate, insisting that their ticket was the one duly submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The petition, signed by Ayoola Peter Olajolo, Director of Administration at the APC National Headquarters, accused Hunye of allegedly parading himself in the media and on social platforms as the party’s governorship candidate despite the party’s position.
The APC described the alleged action as “false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation” capable of misleading voters and destabilising the political environment in Ogun State.
The party further disclosed that Hunye was suspended from the APC on April 7, 2026, following a petition from his Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area. The suspension was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the national leadership.
According to the APC, documents attached to its petition showed that Hunye was suspended over alleged anti-party activities, dealings considered injurious to the party’s interests and actions allegedly intended to create disaffection and division among members.
The party maintained that its governorship primary had been concluded and that the names of Yayi and Kudirat had been formally forwarded to INEC, with acknowledgement slips issued by the electoral commission.
The APC therefore asked Egbetokun to direct the police to invite Hunye for questioning and prosecute him if investigations establish that offences were committed.
It also urged the police to restrain Hunye from further presenting himself as the APC candidate, warning that failure to address the dispute could create confusion and potentially threaten public order in Ogun ahead of the 2027 election.
The party pledged to provide witness statements and documentary evidence to support the police investigation.
The development adds another layer to the emerging political contest in Ogun, where the APC is seeking to consolidate its position ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
