President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and associates of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, who died on Tuesday at the age of 56.
The President described Oladipo’s death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the country, commending his contributions to journalism, particularly political reporting and digital publishing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said Oladipo’s career reflected the important role journalists play in strengthening democracy.
Oladipo, a former Political Editor at PUNCH Newspapers, reportedly died suddenly on Tuesday after a journalism career spanning nearly three decades.
Journalism career spanning decades
The late journalist worked with several Nigerian newspapers during his career before establishing The Eagle Online, where he continued his work in digital journalism and political reporting.
Tinubu said Oladipo devoted significant years of his life to informing the public, holding public officials accountable and providing platforms for public discourse.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation.
“He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy,” the President said.
Contributions to digital journalism
Tinubu also acknowledged Oladipo’s role in the growth of digital journalism through The Eagle Online, which he founded after his years at PUNCH.
According to the President, the deceased journalist’s contributions to political journalism and the digital media industry would remain part of his professional legacy.
He said Oladipo’s work demonstrated how journalism could contribute to an informed citizenry and promote accountability in public life.
Condolences to family and colleagues
The President extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers and friends of the deceased.
Tinubu prayed for the repose of Oladipo’s soul and asked God to grant his loved ones the strength to cope with the loss.
“I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
