ASUU Plateau State varsity declares indefinite strike over unpaid arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has embarked on a total and indefinite strike after accusing the university management of failing to address a six-point charter of demands.

The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday following a congress meeting, after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the administration on August 11 lapsed without resolution.

Vincent Choji, the union’s chairperson, and Lomka Kopdiya, the secretary, made this known in a statement signed by both leaders, stating that the decision followed approval from ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC).

“Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed,” the statement read.

Key among the union’s demands are the commencement of the contributory pension scheme, full implementation of the 2025 federal government-ASUU agreement, and payment of arrears owed since January 1, 2026.

The union is also demanding 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 percent wage award, provision of safe and secure staff quarters, construction of perimeter trenches around the institution, and an end to what it called the intimidation of union leaders.

Following the resolution, the union directed its members to suspend all academic activities until further notice, throwing the institution’s academic calendar into fresh uncertainty.

The development adds to the growing list of disputes between ASUU chapters and state-owned university administrations over unmet financial obligations, as unions across the country continue to press for compliance with federal wage agreements.

Recall that BusinessDay had reported that Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Imo State University, Abia State University, Nasarawa State University, and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, had embarked on 14 days’ total and indefinite strikes over a salary dispute.

Also affected are Gombe State University; Plateau State University; Kaduna State University; Kano State University of Science and Technology; Northwest University; and Taraba State University, among others.
