Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign highly-rated Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with negotiations between the Premier League club and the Serie A side advancing over a transfer package worth around €40 million.

The 18-year-old defender has emerged as Chelsea’s latest target as the London club continues its strategy of investing heavily in promising young talent.

Reports from Goal and Sky Sport Italia indicate that Chelsea have made significant progress after reaching an agreement in principle on personal terms with Ahanor. Talks are now focused on finalising the transfer fee with Atalanta.

Atalanta are understood to have initially valued Ahanor at around €60 million, but negotiations have reportedly brought the asking price down to approximately €40 million.

The proposed deal would represent a significant profit for Atalanta, who signed the defender from Genoa for around €16 million plus add-ons.

Brighton had reportedly shown interest earlier in the transfer window and saw a bid worth approximately €34 million rejected by Atalanta.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Ahanor developed through Genoa’s system before earning a move to Atalanta.

The left-footed defender can operate both as a centre-back and left-back, giving Chelsea another versatile option in defence.

His ability to play in multiple defensive positions is understood to be one of the factors behind Chelsea’s interest as the club continues to build a squad around young players with long-term potential.

Ahanor’s potential arrival would further strengthen Chelsea’s relationship with Atalanta during the transfer window.

The Premier League club have already been linked with a move for Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra, making Ahanor another defensive prospect from the Bergamo-based club to attract Chelsea’s attention.

Chelsea’s recruitment strategy in recent seasons has focused heavily on signing young players with significant development potential, often handing them long-term contracts.

With personal terms reportedly settled, negotiations are now centred on the final structure of the transfer agreement between Chelsea and Atalanta.
