THE Delta North Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Victor Ochei, has called for renewed commitment to transform the state’s resources into prosperity for residents.
Ochei, also a former speaker of the Delta Assembly, made the call on Thursday in Asaba, in a message marking the state 35th anniversary.
He said the anniversary should go beyond celebration, but provide an opportunity for honest reflection on the state’s development journey since its creation in 1991 and its prospects ahead.
According to him, Delta abundant natural resources, significant revenues and enormous human capital have yet to sufficiently translate into improved living conditions for ordinary residents.
”35 years after creation, Delta has undoubtedly made progress, but our enormous potential tells us that we can achieve much more.”
He said the next phase should focus on converting the state’s resources into results and its potential into shared prosperity for all residents.
The NDC Delta North senatorial candidate particularly challenged the senatorial leaders and residents to embrace a development philosophy anchored on stronger institutions, quality education and productive employment opportunities.
He also advocated modern infrastructure and sustainable economic opportunities capable of empowering residents, stimulating enterprise and creating pathways for improved livelihoods across communities.
Ochei said development should ultimately be measured by its impact on ordinary residents, rather than government expenditure or the number of projects announced.
”Our young people deserve opportunities to develop their talents and fulfill their aspirations. Our communities deserve infrastructure that works,” he said.
He added that the people deserved an economy that rewarded enterprise and hard work, while urging greater emphasis on citizens’ productivity and self-reliance.
He stressed that state next development phase must empower residents to become productive and self-reliant, rather than perpetually dependent on political patronage.
Ochei congratulated the people of Delta at home and in the diaspora on the anniversary, expressing confidence that the state’s greatest possibilities still remained ahead.
”At 35, we have come a long way, but the journey is far from complete. This must be a time for renewed vision,” he said.
He added that the state required stronger institutions and greater opportunities for its people, stressing that resources must translate into prosperity and potential into opportunity.
”Our resources must become prosperity. Our potential must become opportunity. And governance must ultimately improve the lives of our people.
”Building a stronger Delta North will contribute significantly to achieving a more prosperous, inclusive and economically vibrant state.(NAN)
