Slovan Bratislava head coach, Yaya Touré, has made history as the first African coach to qualify a team for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League after guiding the Slovakian club past Celje in a dramatic play-off encounter.
Touré’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Celje after extra time on Wednesday night, completing a 3-2 aggregate triumph in the two-legged play-off tie.
Touré achieves historic Champions League milestone
The victory booked Slovan Bratislava a place among the 36 clubs that will compete in the league phase of Europe’s elite club competition.
The Slovakian champions had faced a difficult challenge against Celje but eventually secured the decisive victory in extra time, sparking celebrations among players, officials and supporters.

However, Egbo’s Tirana side did not progress to the league phase, meaning Touré has now become the first African coach to take a team through the qualifying rounds and into the main league phase.
The distinction gives the former Ivory Coast captain a unique place in the history of African coaches in European club football.

Slovan Bratislava will now turn its attention to the league phase, where the club will face opponents drawn from some of Europe’s strongest domestic leagues.
