GUSAU — A campaign flag-off ceremony organised by the member representing Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Kabiru Amadu Mai Palace, has reportedly turned violent, with three people allegedly killed in Mada District of Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during the flag-off ceremony organised by the lawmaker, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Mada District had been selected by the campaign organising committee as the venue for the event.
However, residents said the ceremony was disrupted amid growing frustration over insecurity in the area.
An eyewitness, identified as Danlami Na Inna, said residents were more interested in seeing political leaders address insecurity than organising campaign rallies.
He said many residents expected politicians to visit the area to sympathise with victims of recent attacks and provide assistance to displaced persons.
“Currently, Mada district is overpopulated by people who have been displaced from villages around by bandits. Therefore, all we need is to witness massive assistance of food, clothes and medicines from our politicians, but not any move in the name of scouting for votes,” Danlami said.
A shopkeeper, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was forced to close his shop and flee after people suddenly started running in different directions.
“I did not understand what was happening, so I decided to lock my shop and leave. I was scared when I came across three people motionless and lying in blood,” he said.
The circumstances surrounding the reported deaths could not be independently established as of the time of filing this report.
However, the lawmaker’s media aide, Mustapha Gusau, dismissed reports that the campaign was disrupted by angry youths.
He said the event was conducted peacefully and was well received by residents of Mada.
“The event was conducted peacefully with people’s hearts full of joy because of the amount of love they have for the Hon. Member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Amadu Mai Palace,” he said.
The development comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of Zamfara State, where bandit attacks, abductions and displacement have continued to affect communities.
Residents of Mada and surrounding communities have continued to demand stronger security measures and assistance for people displaced by attacks.
They said the priority should be the protection of lives and property and the restoration of normal economic and social activities, rather than political activities.
The latest incident is expected to heighten concerns over the conduct of political activities in communities grappling with insecurity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
