A teenager, Yusuf Ahmad, has been killed in a suspected reprisal attack by street thugs in Konannen Gidan Mai area of Dorayi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

Yusuf was allegedly attacked on Tuesday while returning home after attending a Maulud gathering in Unguwar Bello, with the incident said to have been linked to an earlier clash involving another youth in a neighbouring community.

The Kano State Police Command confirmed that security personnel were immediately deployed to the area following a distress call over the violence, while some suspects were arrested in connection with the killing.

A resident of the area, Ukasha Idris, told Arewa PUNCH that Yusuf was attacked by suspected thugs while making his way home from the religious gathering.

“The deceased was on his way home after attending the Maulud gathering when the thugs attacked him,” Idris said.

According to him, the attackers allegedly used weapons to inflict deep cuts on Yusuf’s chest and neck, resulting to his death.

Idris explained that the killing was believed to have been triggered by an earlier confrontation involving a youth from a neighbouring community.

He said, “The attack was believed to be connected to the earlier clash, as some youths had mobilised after their friend was allegedly injured.”

The development reportedly created tension in the community, with residents expressing concern over the activities of suspected street gangs and the growing pattern of retaliatory attacks among youths.

Confirming the incident, the police spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the command received a distress call and immediately deployed security personnel to the area.

He narrated the circumstances surrounding the killing in parts: “The command has deployed security personnel to the area, and some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident,” Kiyawa said.

He added that investigation was ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons allegedly involved in the killing.

“The investigation will continue until all those found to have participated in the killing are brought to justice,” the police spokesman said.

Kiyawa urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the police and other security agencies as efforts continued to restore peace in the area.

The police also advised residents against taking the law into their own hands, particularly in disputes involving youths and suspected street gangs.

Our correspondent pointed out that the Kano killing has renewed concerns about the spread of youth violence and reprisal attacks in parts of Kano, where minor disagreements can sometimes escalate into deadly confrontations.

Residents who spoke on the development appealed to the youths to forgo revenge attacks and instead report disputes and criminal activities to security agencies.

They also called for increased security patrols in Dorayi and neighbouring communities to prevent further violence and protect residents.

One of the concerns raised by community members was the possibility of further reprisal attacks following Yusuf’s death, particularly if those involved in the earlier confrontation attempted to retaliate.

Thus, not a few of the residents urged parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and youth organisations to intensify efforts to discourage young people from joining street gangs or participating in violent confrontations.

The incident also occurred amid Maulud activities in the area, prompting calls for stronger security arrangements around religious gatherings and the routes used by worshippers returning home.

Community members also said religious gatherings should remain safe spaces and should not become linked to violence or attacks on participants.

Meanwhile, the police said the arrest of some suspects would assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the killing and identifying others allegedly involved.
