The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) loyal to Dr Frederick Fasehun has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, urging Nigerians across the country, particularly those in the North, to support his re-election in 2027.

The organisation made its position known on Saturday in Lagos during the 32nd anniversary of the OPC and the inauguration of its new National Executive Council.

Speaking at the event, the National President of OPC Worldwide, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi Idowu, said the organisation would continue to support Tinubu, provided the political environment remained conducive for a free and fair election.

Afolabi said the OPC contributed to Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election and would be prepared to “queue behind” him again in 2027.

He said the organisation’s position was consistent with the philosophy of its late founder, Dr Frederick Fasehun, who, according to him, regarded any Yoruba person occupying the nation’s highest political office as a collective project of the Yoruba people.

“As a result of this orientation that Baba gave us, and if the right atmosphere is created, we shall still queue behind President Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election,” Afolabi said.

The OPC leader also appealed to other regions of the country to support Tinubu’s second-term bid, arguing that doing so would enable the President to consolidate and complete the reforms initiated by his administration.

He particularly urged the North to reciprocate the support Tinubu gave former President Muhammadu Buhari during his two terms in office.

“The North especially should realise it is payback time for the backing Asiwaju gave to Muhammadu Buhari’s two tenures of eight years,” he said.

Afolabi, however, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to remain neutral during the 2027 elections and ensure that the votes of Nigerians are allowed to count.

“As the country looks forward to the coming elections, we encourage the primary electoral institutions — INEC and the security agencies — to maintain a neutral role and ensure that the votes of every voting Nigerian will count,” he said.

The OPC also called on the Federal Government, state governments and legislators to treat insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of living as matters of national emergency.

Afolabi said Nigeria remained a country of enormous potential but noted that citizens were currently facing significant economic and security challenges.

Presenting the certificate of office to the newly elected National President, Chairman, OPC Board of Trustees and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Wale Oshin, charged the new executive members to promote unity, peace and progress among members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), both nationally and internationally.

“I urge you to promote peace and unity among all members. Let your administration be guided by the Constitution of the association. May God guide you on the right path,” he said.
