2027: Provide Facts, Evidence Obi Was Against Northerners As Gov, POMR Charges Opponents

The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has challenged individuals allegedly spreading claims that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, was hostile to Northerners during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State to provide verifiable evidence to support such allegations.

In a statement issued over the weekend by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, the media office said it had received credible intelligence indicating that some persons were continuing what it described as a malicious whisper campaign against Obi in rural communities across Northern Nigeria.

According to the statement, the allegations have persisted despite repeated denials by Northern leaders resident in Anambra State, who, it said, had publicly affirmed that Obi maintained cordial relations with Northerners and supported their communities while serving as governor and after leaving office.

The media office accused those behind the alleged campaign of deliberately circulating false narratives at gatherings in the North in an attempt to undermine Obi’s reputation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“We challenge those behind this campaign to provide names, dates, records and verifiable evidence supporting their allegations. They should cease hiding behind whispered accusations and political propaganda,” the statement said.

POMR maintained that Obi governed Anambra State without discrimination on the basis of ethnicity or religion and rejected claims that he harboured anti-Northern sentiments.

It argued that the renewed allegations were politically motivated and linked to the growing momentum of the 2027 election season.

“The timing is revealing. As the 2027 election approaches, those unable to challenge Peter Obi on his competence, integrity and public service record are resorting to the oldest political weapon—ethnic suspicion and misinformation,” the statement added.

The media office urged Northern Nigerians to scrutinise political claims carefully and base their judgments on facts and policy issues rather than rumours and propaganda.

It further called for national unity, warning against attempts to exploit ethnic divisions for political advantage.

“Nigeria cannot be rebuilt by weaponising lies that have long divided its people. Enough of the lies. Let the facts speak for a new Nigeria that is possible,” the statement concluded.
