Two people have been confirmed dead after a machete- and knife-wielding man reportedly stormed the IMAX cinema in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night, August 29, 2026.

The incident reportedly occurred when the assailant attempted to gain entry into the cinema premises and was stopped by security guards.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs when he arrived at the cinema carrying a machete and knife.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the suspect allegedly attacked security personnel after being prevented from entering the premises.

The police spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the assailant, who reportedly appeared to be destitute, allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and injured another.

The injured security guard was reportedly attacked during the confrontation at the cinema.

The police spokesperson further said the assailant was subsequently mobbed, resulting in his death.

Following the incident, the Chief Security Officer of the cinema was taken into police custody as authorities commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Abimbola said the police were also working to obtain and review CCTV footage from the premises to establish what happened and identify any other persons who may have been involved in the incident.

She confirmed that a full investigation had been launched into the incident.
