Super Eagles midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali, is set to continue his career in Cyprus, with a move to First Division club, PAC Omonia, on the verge of completion following his departure from English side, Barnsley.

Nwakali mutually terminated his contract with Barnsley to become a free agent, paving the way for the proposed switch to Cyprus.

A product of the Diamond Football Academy, Nwakali shot to prominence after captaining Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to the FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Chile in 2015, a tournament in which he won the Golden Ball as the competition’s best player.

The 24-year-old’s performances at that tournament earned him a move to Arsenal, but administrative issues, including a work-permit dispute that kept him away from his parent club for months, meant he never played for the Gunners’ senior side.

He subsequently had loan spells at MVV Maastricht, VVV-Venlo and Porto B, before permanent moves to Spanish sides Huesca, Alcorcón and Ponferradina, and later Chaves in Portugal, ahead of his switch to Barnsley in August last year.

The move to PAC Omonia is expected to give the midfielder a fresh opportunity to revive his career and establish himself in the Cypriot top flight.
