The Delta State Government has condemned the harassment of young women in Ozoro, describing the act as criminal and not connected to the cultural festival. 

 

While speaking on The Morning Show on Arise TV, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori immediately ordered a public condemnation and directed security agencies to arrest those involved, with several suspects already in custody as investigations continue.

 

He noted that although there is no confirmed rape case, video evidence supports prosecution for harassment, with some suspects released and others still in custody. He added that the state is considering psychosocial support for victims. Aniagwu clarified that the Ozoro festival involves prayers for married women seeking fertility and not molestation, stressing the act was a deviation from culture, while reaffirming government’s commitment to protect women and maintain law and order.
