The traditional ruler of Owa-Onire in Kwara State, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi, has abandoned his palace and relocated to the outskirts of Ilorin following repeated security breaches in his community.
The monarch disclosed that his decision was prompted by a series of attacks by armed groups, including a violent invasion of his residence on December 31, 2025.
He recounted that the attackers forced their way into the palace, seizing mobile phones belonging to him and his wife, as well as cash, at gunpoint.
According to him, although the assailants did not abduct him during the incident, they reportedly took away two palace aides before fleeing the scene.
Oba Fabiyi further revealed that the attack came after an earlier kidnapping ordeal in which he was held captive for seven days and later released after a ransom of ₦5 million was paid by members of the community.
He suggested that the prior incident may have influenced the attackers’ decision not to abduct him again during the December raid.
The monarch expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, stressing that he would not return to his palace until adequate protection is guaranteed. He lamented the lack of a police station and described the existing security presence as insufficient.
Despite relocating, the traditional ruler said he continues to carry out his responsibilities from his current location, noting that neighbouring communities are also grappling with similar security challenges.
