The Delta State Police Command has attributed the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect by a police officer to a “spiritual attack.â€
A video showing the shooting of a suspect who had been restrained by a police officer attached to the Delta police command has surfaced on social media surfaced on Tuesday.
In the less-than-two-minute video, the male suspect is seen sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back with a rope.
The suspect can be heard pleading with the police officers not to shoot him, saying he was deceived by a friend who is residing in the Sapele area of Delta state.
“Officers, abeg, I go tell you everything. Na my friend deceived me. E dey Sapele. I go carry you go the place,†the suspect begged the officers in Pidgin English
As the suspect was pleading with the officers, one of them, dressed in mufti, was seen cocking his rifle and then shooting directly at the suspect.
Immediately, the suspect lay on the group as passers-by watched the incident.
Afterwards, the police officers carried the body into a Toyota Sienna vehicle with the inscription: “The Nigeria Police Force Effurun Area Command, Uvwieâ€.
In a statement on Tuesday, Bright Edafe, police spokesperson in Delta, identified the suspect as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
Edafe said the shooting of the suspect by a police officer identified as Nuhu Usman led to Ogidi’s death.
He said Usman has been arrested and transferred to the state police headquarters, Asaba, for necessary disciplinary action.
The Command said the officer involved has been taken into custody, while investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
However speaking on Wednesday in a televised interview, Delta State Police PPRO, Bright Edafe, reacted to the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect by an ASP, describing it as a “difficult moment†for the force.
According to him, ‘Spirituality is the only explanation for what he did.’
The unusual explanation has, however, generated public concern, with many Nigerians questioning the basis of the claim and demanding a more transparent account of the incident. Critics argue that such cases require clear procedural explanations rather than unconventional interpretations.
