The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has taken into custody a police officer connected to the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, confirming that the case has now been moved to higher authorities for further action.

 

Police authorities said the incident occurred on April 26 following an intelligence-led operation targeting 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who was alleged to be attempting to move a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition. During the operation, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, reportedly opened fire in a manner that contravened established procedures, leading to the suspect’s death.

 

Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi faulted the officer’s conduct, citing a violation of Force Order 237 and operational standards of the Nigeria Police Force. The Command stressed that the action taken does not reflect the institution’s rules of engagement.

 

The officer has since been arrested, formally queried, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where a disciplinary process is expected to determine further measures, including possible prosecution. The police also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public of a transparent process.
