A woman from the Ihunowere community in Nsukka area of Enugu State has reportedly been apprehended by youths of the community after she allegedly took her married daughter to terminate a pregnancy following a family disagreement.
According to reports circulating within the community, the issue began after the woman’s son-in-law allegedly failed to present food items and gifts to his wife’s family during the Christmas and Easter celebrations, a gesture said to be customary in the area.
The woman was said to have confronted the man over the matter, but he reportedly explained that he was experiencing financial difficulties and could not afford the items at the time.
Following the disagreement, the woman allegedly asked her married daughter to return to her family home. Reports further claimed that the daughter later returned home pregnant, after which her mother allegedly took her to terminate the pregnancy.
Local media platform Tower FM Nsukka reported that community leaders and youths intervened in the matter and allegedly ordered the woman to pay her son-in-law the sum of ₦1 million as damages.
The community also reportedly directed her to perform traditional funeral rites for the unborn child in line with local customs and beliefs.
