SWAN commends Oladimeji

Speaking from the SWAN National Secretariat at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, the association’s President, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, described Oladimeji as a selfless sports technocrat whose contributions to sports journalism and the legal profession have earned him widespread respect.

Benjamin said the association was proud to identify with one of its members whose professional accomplishments continue to attract recognition at the continental level.

“I want to congratulate one of our own, whom we are always proud of, Abdulgafar Oladimeji, on his induction as a Fellow of the African Transformers Institute and his induction into the Diplomatic Assembly,” he said.

According to him, Oladimeji’s wealth of experience in journalism, sports administration and the justice sector would add value to the work of the Diplomatic Assembly.

Confidence in sports diplomacy

The SWAN president expressed optimism that Oladimeji’s appointment would create fresh opportunities for the promotion of sports diplomacy and strengthen Nigeria’s influence through sports on the international stage.

“We are confident and rest assured that the Assembly has gained a resourceful individual in its new cohort. As a sports journalist, he is well travelled, and his experience in journalism and the justice sector will be of immense benefit to the Assembly.

“We are going to give him all the support that he requires to excel. We are hopeful that his involvement and participation will open a new chapter in the growth of sports diplomacy in Nigeria and the African continent at large,” Benjamin added.

Oladimeji outlines vision

Reacting to the honour, Oladimeji said his mission is to elevate sports diplomacy and position it as a strategic tool for Nigeria’s development and international engagement.

“My mission is to project sports diplomacy. My vision is to berth sports diplomacy to its rightful place in Nigerian growth history,” he said.

He explained that sports diplomacy remains one of the most effective platforms for fostering international cooperation, strengthening bilateral relationships and promoting peace among nations.

According to him, the strategic use of sports, athletes and sporting events enables countries to build bridges, reduce political tensions and improve global relations through shared values and healthy competition.

Sports as tool for national development

Oladimeji noted that beyond competition, sports have become an important instrument for cultural exchange, conflict resolution and economic growth.

He stressed that countries around the world increasingly leverage sporting events to enhance their international image, deepen diplomatic ties and create opportunities for investment and tourism.

He maintained that Nigeria possesses enormous potential to maximise sports diplomacy by harnessing the achievements of its athletes and the popularity of its sporting competitions to strengthen the country’s global profile.

Recognition for distinguished service

The latest honour adds to Oladimeji’s growing profile as one of Nigeria’s respected sports journalists and advocates of sports development.

His induction into the Diplomatic Assembly and recognition by the African Transformers Institute are expected to further expand his role in promoting dialogue, cooperation and development through sports.

SWAN expressed confidence that the recognition would not only inspire other sports journalists but also reinforce the growing importance of sports diplomacy as a vehicle for peace, development and international collaboration.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote professionalism in sports journalism while encouraging members to continue contributing to the advancement of Nigerian sports beyond reporting, particularly in areas of policy advocacy, administration and international engagement.
