Rick and Morty wrapped up its ninth season over the weekend, and there are at least three more seasons currently in the works. The show’s first proper spin-off, President Curtis, just debuted and was swiftly renewed for a second season. But even with all that Rick and Morty bounty, fans still want to know: what’s up with the movie?

Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, who’s no stranger to that question as it applies to Community, is probably already a little tired of being asked about the Adult Swim show’s big-screen debut. All we really know about it is that Rick and Morty veteran Jacob Hair is aboard as director. But that won’t stop Harmon from giving delightfully enticing answers about the film’s potential.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Harmon name-checked one surprising inspiration: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies. There’s no script yet, he said, but there is “a technically approved idea that we’re dreaming away on.”

Part of that, apparently, involves visions of Arrakis. “I just watched the Dune movies because of messing around with the Rick and Morty movie script,” he told THR. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so late to Dune.’ It’s so rad.”

Harmon’s hopes for the Rick and Morty movie are, perhaps unsurprisingly, sky-high and delivered in a tongue-and-cheek way.

“It would be my goal, however self-destructive, to make it the greatest movie ever to exist. That might make it hard to write. It would probably be a sci-fi epic, transcending time and space, but not in a way that was unsatisfying,” he told THR.

He mentioned Dune again as well as Lethal Weapon 2 and Indiana Jones, then added, “One could argue that it’s a concept that would be my undoing and the franchise’s as well, since me having permission to think about stuff is not the recipe for success that people would think. It’s more of a trailhead to hell, traditionally.”

We’ll be ready to watch that for sure. For now, you can check out President Curtis, which Harmon co-created, Sunday nights on Adult Swim, and the next day on HBO Max.
