The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, has expressed concern over the resurgence of violent attacks and killings in Southern Kaduna, calling on security agencies to adopt intelligence-driven and proactive strategies to prevent further bloodshed, arrest perpetrators and ensure the protection of lives and property.

The union also urged security agencies to intensify efforts towards securing the unconditional release of victims abducted from Ariko Community in Kachia Local Government Area, who have remained in captivity since April. Blueprint reports

These were part of the resolutions contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the July 2026 Congress of the NUJ Kaduna State Council held at the Council Secretariat in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The communiqué was signed by the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, Usman Sani, Secretary of the Committee, Okpani Austine Agbo Emmanuel, and Committee Member, Lilian Silas. It was electronically endorsed by the Council Secretary of the NUJ Kaduna State Council, Gambo Santos Sanga.

Congress worries over insecurity

The Congress expressed deep concern over the renewed attacks in Southern Kaduna, urging security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and deploy preventive security measures to forestall further attacks across the affected communities.

The union stressed the need for security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the attacks are identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Congress also lamented the continued captivity of victims abducted from Ariko Community in Kachia Local Government Area, noting that several of them have remained in the custody of their abductors since April.

Members appealed to security agencies to intensify rescue operations to ensure the safe and unconditional release of the victims.

The union equally sympathised with the people of Kauru Local Government Area over the recent attacks that claimed several lives and the planned mass burial of victims scheduled for July 31.

Security crucial for 2027 elections

With preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually taking shape, Congress called on governments at all levels to guarantee adequate security before, during and after the polls.

The union said no eligible Nigerian should be disenfranchised or prevented from exercising his or her constitutional right to vote because of insecurity or intimidation.

According to the communiqué, peaceful elections remain fundamental to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.

Police urged to strengthen media partnership

Congress called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to improve collaboration with journalists through the timely dissemination of credible and accurate information.

The union noted that stronger cooperation between security agencies and the media would enhance public awareness, curb misinformation and encourage citizens to support ongoing security operations.

It reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in Kaduna State to responsible reporting that promotes peace and national security.

Governor commended on agriculture

The Congress commended Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for the timely distribution of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs to farmers across the state.

According to the union, the intervention would significantly boost agricultural productivity, improve food security and enhance the livelihoods of farmers.

Members observed that agriculture remains one of the key drivers of Kaduna State’s economy and urged the government to sustain policies that support farmers.

Praise for infrastructure projects

Congress also applauded Governor Uba Sani for the construction of modern bus stops at strategic locations across Kaduna State.

The union described the projects as important investments that would improve urban transportation and provide safer, more organised public transit facilities for residents.

It, however, appealed to the state government to ensure the speedy completion of all ongoing projects for the benefit of the people.

Support for Jerry Adams’ nomination

The journalists equally commended Governor Uba Sani for nominating Mr. Jerry Adams as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

Congress described the nomination as a demonstration of inclusiveness, religious balance and commitment to strengthening unity and peaceful coexistence among the diverse people of Kaduna State.

Members expressed optimism that the decision would further promote harmony and deepen confidence in the state’s political process.

Flood prevention measures advocated

Following flood predictions for Kaduna State, Congress called on the state government and the Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) to intensify measures aimed at preventing flooding.

The union urged the authorities to prioritise the evacuation of refuse from drainages, clear blocked waterways and strictly enforce environmental sanitation regulations to minimise the impact of flooding during the rainy season.

It stressed that proactive environmental management would help safeguard lives, property and public infrastructure.

Commitment to ethical journalism

Congress reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ Kaduna State Council to responsible, ethical and professional journalism.

The union pledged to continue promoting peace, national unity and development through factual, balanced and objective reportage, while encouraging journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Leadership, welfare applauded

Members also commended the leadership of the NUJ Kaduna State Council for its unwavering commitment to the welfare of members and the advancement of the union.

The Congress acknowledged the council’s efforts in strengthening the union, improving members’ welfare and promoting professional excellence among journalists in the state.

Tribute to late member

As part of its proceedings, Congress observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late Mrs. Margaret Johnson.

The union prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and asked God to grant her family the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.

The communiqué reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ Kaduna State Council to advocating peace, security, good governance and professional journalism while continuing to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kaduna State and Nigeria.
