Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi has qualified for the men’s 400 metres final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after producing a commanding performance to win the opening semi-final on Thursday.

Ogazi crossed the finish line in 44.52 seconds, the fastest time in Semi-final 1, to secure one of the two automatic qualification spots for the final and reinforce his status as one of the favourites for a podium finish.

Botswana’s Lee Bhekempilo Eppie also progressed automatically after placing second in 45.26 seconds, while Jamaica’s Zandrion Barnes advanced as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers after finishing third in 45.38 seconds.

South Africa’s Lythe Pillay narrowly missed out after clocking 45.87 seconds, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jaden Marchan (45.89), India’s Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi (46.33), Zambia’s Kennedy Luchembe (46.60) and Kenya’s George Mutuku (47.22).

Ogazi controlled the race from the closing bend, pulling clear of the field to seal victory in convincing fashion and continue Nigeria’s impressive showing in the one-lap event at the Games.

His qualification comes after compatriot Ella Onojuvwevwo also booked her place in the women’s 400m final, raising hopes of a strong medal haul for Team Nigeria in Glasgow.

The athletics competition is being held at Scotstoun Stadium as part of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which run from July 23 to August 2.
