Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo booked her place in the women’s 400 metres final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after producing an impressive victory in her semi-final on Thursday.

Onojuvwevwo crossed the line first in 51.47 seconds to win Semi-final 3, comfortably securing one of the two automatic qualification spots for the medal race.

Wales’ Charlotte Henrich also progressed after finishing second in 52.13 seconds, while Grenada’s Jamara Patterson placed third in 52.92 seconds but missed out on an automatic qualification.

South Africa’s Marlie Viljoen finished fourth in 52.99 seconds, ahead of Kenya’s Mercy Chebet (53.49), Jamaica’s Leah Anderson (54.15), Zambia’s Niddy Mingilishi (55.01) and Uganda’s Leni Shida (55.85).

Onojuvwevwo looked composed throughout the race, taking control in the closing stages to seal victory and strengthen Nigeria’s hopes of another athletics medal at the Games.

The qualification continues an encouraging campaign for Team Nigeria in Glasgow, where the athletics competition has already produced several standout performances from the country’s athletes.
